How Pretty in Pink Shaped My Existence

Someone posted on Facebook today that Pretty in Pink is turning 30 this year.

Thirty? Already?  How am I getting this old, this fast?

I thought I would write a post dedicated to how am I basically a bi-product of the movie Pretty in Pink.  I don’t know that there is a movie that has had as much personal influence on me as this movie has, and now is the perfect time to reflect on it.

Disclaimer:  I’ve never actually seen this movie in the theatre.  I was 13 when it came out and that was the year of Karate Kid 2.  Ralph Macchio was my movie star boyfriend back then and I saw KK2 TWICE in the theatre.  The second time wasn’t intentional. I was actually trying to lie my was into a Poltergeist 2 (sequel heavy, ’86), which was rated 14A. I thought by pairing makeup with a 14 year old-type bravado I would fool the 16-year old box office gatekeeper into letting me in.  Sadly I looked more like this:

and the gatekeeper did this

So I went to see this…again

I had a VHS copy of PIP and watched it…a LOT.  Here are some of my life experiences taken straight from PIP.

I worked in a record store because of Pretty in Pink.

Several record stores, actually.  And it’s all because of this movie.

I want to be Iona more than I want to be Andie.

We’ll get to Andie in a second.  Iona is THE SHIT.  Not only was she super stylish, she also had that thick Cyndi-esque New York accent.  She didn’t take shit from people, she was sure of herself and she had a rad apartment, not to mention the best outfits ever.  I even tried to make this skirt in my dad’s upholstery shop:

Yeah, she turned “normal” at the end for the pet shop guy, but you know that didn’t last.  Ladies this cool can’t be normalized.  I still think she is a style icon.  I still wear a snood because of Iona.

My dog is named Duckie.

He looks nothing like Jon Cryer but he is totally a duck man.

This jacket.

I have dedicated literally hours to the internet trying to find this jacket.  It continues to elude me.

Sewing & Thrifting.

Andie was a whiz with a sewing machine.  Growing up with an upholsterer dad, I also had some experience with a sewing machine.  I even had my own bag business for a while:

I also made the outfit for my album cover, using my sewing skills and thrifting eye–developed from the PIP influence:

Home Decor.

The tiles in my kitchen and bathroom floor match Iona’s floor, just sayin’.

Andie’s car.  Duckie’s hair. Iona’s poofy dress & beehive.  Retro is everywhere in this movie, and it is everywhere in my life too.

Yes. Pretty in Pink has influenced me more than any other movie, and so I enthusiastically salute this cherished gem of a film on its 30th birthday.
