They Liked the Show…”BIG TIME”!

Last night was my VD is for Lovers show!  And it was also the coldest and snowiest night of the winter!

We received more snow yesterday than we have the whole winter so far.  And we had extreme cold going on, with it feeling like MINUS 25!! It didn’t stop snowing the whole day long.  I was worried about the show because I didn’t know if people would brave the weather to come out, but come out they did!

I can’t feel my face, but I’m putting on a show anyway!

A few people let me know they wouldn’t be able to make it, and some came from as far as Port Stanley and Goderich to see the show.  (Thank you to EVERYONE who braved the weather to be there!)  But 80% of ticket holders showed up, so I gave them the best damn Valentine’s show I could!

This show I chose to play piano instead of ukulele.  I wanted to bring both instruments but there was no way I was lugging all that stuff around in that weather!  I wrote three new tracks for the show and had a full set of new stories to share, taken straight from my diaries.  Oh man, reading your 20’s life through 40’s eyes….I strongly considered burning the diaries after I re-read them all, because it was painful and cringeworthy at best.  I chose some mint stories to share at the show, with the audience enjoying the string of entries of my obsessive pursuit of a former flame, who I said I wanted back

(and who also broke up with me because he wanted to spend his time “drinking his face off” instead…yes, he said that to me, and I wrote that I wanted to know the truth and would get to the bottom of it!  Really I had to look no further than the bottom of a beer bottle, because he had a serious alcohol problem at the time)

I wrote two new comedy songs, Mating Call (about online dating) and Cat Lady (about…cat ladies, obviously) and someone asked me after the show if Cat Lady was on YouTube so she could send it to her friend. Not yet, but I’ll get there!!

I also wrote a non-comedy song called Paper & Ink, which was inspired by my sifting through old diaries and love letters, and how when a relationship ends all you have left is paper and ink.  People commented they liked that one (even if they had no idea I played it too slow and in the wrong key), so I had a lot of positive feedback on the new songs.

Someone described my show as “painfully funny” in that the comedy is great because it’s so relatable and the comedy comes from it being true. This person also said “you have a really good singing voice” which I had to chuckle at, because of this.  Oh the irony!

The best thing about this show was that a year ago, I played a show in the same room in February and had wanted to quit music after it because I was so unhappy with the way things were going.  Fast forward a year later, and I’m playing a sold out show, in the shittiest weather possible, and people came out to fill the room.  Life is funny, isn’t it?

So now I move onto the next item on my to-do list, getting the video for London Girl finished, and then starting pre-production on new videos for comedy.  And in just 10 weeks I’ll be heading back to my beloved Broadway for a week of shows and NYC fun.  So far 2016 is AWESOME, snowstorm and all!

Once again, I laughed till I cried. A few of your tunes are still stuck in my head, most notably London Girl and the song about your fabulous dog. You really need to post the lyrics somewhere so I can catch the ones I missed due to laughing too hard. Can’t wait for the next show!
